Reimagining Front Yards, Growing Healthier Communities

Kind Hearts Bloom is excited to launch Community Roots Gardens, a new initiative that helps Grand Rapids neighbors transform their front and side yards into vibrant, community-centered gardens. By choosing a focus—native plants, vegetables, or a combination—participants grow more than gardens; they grow connections, resilience, and hope.

Applications will be accepted September 1 - October 6, 2025.

Why Community Roots?

Front yards are some of the most visible and underutilized spaces in our neighborhoods. By turning them into flourishing gardens, we can:

  • Support pollinators, birds, and local ecosystems

  • Increase access to fresh, healthy food

  • Create gathering spaces that spark neighborly connections

  • Improve mental health through time in nature and community

Garden Options

Applicants can select from three focus areas:

  • 1. Native Plant & Pollinator Garden

A diverse planting of Michigan natives that supports pollinators, reduces water use, and beautifies your neighborhood year-round.

  • 2. Raised-Bed Vegetable Garden

A productive food garden designed for maximum yield, inspiring neighbors to grow their own and sharing fresh harvests close to home.

  • 3. Combination Garden

The best of both worlds—native plantings alongside raised vegetable beds to feed both people and pollinators.

Program Commitments

Community Roots is a two-year program that includes:

  • Training and education in gardening, sustainability, and community-building

  • On-site support and volunteer engagement

  • A small financial contribution toward materials (when applicable)

  • Agreement to host signage, volunteers, and neighborhood tours

  • Long-term commitment to maintaining your garden after the program concludes

Who Should Apply?

We’re looking for Grand Rapids homeowners who:

  • Have a front or side yard in a high-traffic, neighbor-facing location

  • Want to inspire their community through gardening

  • Are ready to dig in and nurture their garden long-term through a two year educational and training commitment
